Together, TRREB’s almost 70,000 Members represent a powerful and informed voice for housing affordability and the future of our region. But that voice is strongest when we participate in the democratic process.

On Monday, October 26, voters across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and Simcoe County will elect the mayors and councillors who will make important decisions about the future of our cities and communities over the next four years.

That’s why TRREB has been working throughout the municipal election campaign to make housing affordability and supply a priority for candidates across the GTA.

Through our Removing Roadblocks campaign, we’re encouraging candidates to commit to practical solutions that will make it easier and more affordable to build, buy and own a home.

TRREB’s Toronto Mayoral Candidate Roundtables: Advancing Housing Solutions

As part of our municipal election engagement, TRREB invited all leading Toronto mayoral candidates to participate in individual roundtable discussions and to hear TRREB’s REALTOR® perspectives on housing affordability, homeownership, and the municipal policies affecting housing supply. These meetings support TRREB’s broader Removing Roadblocks advocacy campaign and offer direct, non-partisan engagement with candidates.

Roundtable with Brad Bradford

TRREB met with Toronto mayoral candidate and City Councillor Brad Bradford to discuss housing affordability, the cost of homeownership and opportunities to remove municipal barriers to housing construction.

The discussion focused on TRREB’s longstanding priorities, including reducing upfront costs for homebuyers, streamlining development approvals, supporting additional housing supply and ensuring municipal policies encourage housing investment.

A significant development during the campaign has been Bradford’s proposal to provide Municipal Land Transfer Tax relief on the first $1.1 million of eligible home purchases. The proposal addresses a key TRREB advocacy priority, and the Board has welcomed it as a positive step toward reducing barriers to homeownership.

Roundtable with Chris Alexander

TRREB also met with Toronto mayoral candidate and former federal cabinet minister Chris Alexander to discuss Toronto’s housing affordability challenges and the municipal policy changes needed to support new housing construction.

The roundtable allowed TRREB to share recommendations on reducing housing-related costs, improving the efficiency of municipal approvals, expanding housing choice and ensuring that infrastructure investment supports future growth.

Alexander subsequently withdrew from the mayoral race on October 6 without endorsing another candidate. His participation in the roundtable reflected TRREB’s commitment to engaging candidates across the political spectrum and keeping housing affordability central to the election.

Roundtable with Carolyn Parrish

TRREB and the Cornerstone Association of REALTORS® met with Mississauga mayoral candidate Carolyn Parrish. The discussion covered several issues central to TRREB’s Removing Roadblocks campaign, including a commitment not to introduce a municipal land transfer tax or a vacant home tax, and increasing housing choice. The conversation also touched on adding REALTOR® voices to her Housing Task Force, reducing the cost of building new homes, lowering development charges, and keeping property tax increases close to the inflation rate through changes to regional services.

Parrish explained that she is focused on advancing the city centre redevelopment project and advocating for fairness in reforming Peel Region’s police funding formula.

Mississauga Mayoral Debate

TRREB and the Cornerstone Association of REALTORS® also co-hosted a Mississauga mayoral debate with Bonnie Crombie, Dipika Damerla and Alvin Tedjo earlier in October, for a policy-focused discussion about Mississauga’s future. They engaged in a spirited exchange on a range of issues, including their platforms on improving housing affordability, increasing supply, and their visions for Mississauga.

All three candidates committed not to seek MLTT taxing powers from the province. They also committed to including REALTOR® representation on a mayoral housing task force. They outlined their platform commitments on property taxes, a vacant home tax, development charges, and other housing-related issues.

TRREB Simcoe Open House with Mayor Alex Nuttall

Over the summer, TRREB hosted an open house at our York-Simcoe Hub and invited local politicians to mingle with Members. We welcomed Barrie Mayor Alex Nuttall, who shared city updates and his election platform and housing priorities. Mayor Nuttall addressed housing supply, affordability, growth and overall municipal policy priorities.
